Breastfeeding cuts risk of type 2 diabetis in moms
Another reason to feed your kids breast milk, as study shows that breastfeeding moms are less prone to type 2 diabetes.
The research by University of Pittsburgh, showed that almost half the women who breastfeed are at lesser risk of type 2 diabetes compared to the ones who don’t. Albeit the reason for it being unclear, this may have do something with the weight that women gain during pregnancy. Researchers think that breastfeeding may help in losing those weight post childbirth.
“Breastfeeding plays an integral part in the growth of the child, and is a natural process. When a mother stops feeding her child prematurely, she is bound to retain more fat, which may have a detrimental effect on her health” says Dr. Eleanor Bimla Schwarz, the lead researcher of the study.
Previous studies had shown that breastfeeding may enhance the mother’s response to insulin. Though mothers do develop gestational diabetes while pregnancy, it has been shown to strengthen the glucose metabolism in infants.
Though more researches continue to emphasize how crucial breastfeeding is, surveys show only around 15% among the American women breastfeed their kids for 6 months or more.
Dr .Schwarz added: “The doctors should consider counseling the mothers about how breastfeeding can prove beneficial to them. We hope the results of our study prompt them to do so.”
